PERF Copenhagen Sustainability Forum - 2018 Conference Highlights
The conference in Copenhagen (April 12 and 13, 2018) was a good opportunity to learn about the various Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF) projects and environmental technology development in general. Here are the highlights I captured:
IPIECA/UNEP Sustainable Development Goals (STGs) – Jim Halbertson (IPIECA) reviewed the STGs which were actually issued in 2017 but you may not be aware of them. Quite a set of expectations – sort of a best of best of all forms of sustainability practices. This link has the infographics for each, which is a link to underlying detail. Worth a look.
https://www.undp.org/content/undp/en/home/sustainable-development-goals.htmlSKYTEM – Matt Halkjaer (Ramboll) presented this new approach to defining the extent of fresh and brackish water underground (down to 1500 ft) that can produce 3-D maps of large areas without the expense of installing wells. The technique uses a 100 foot diameter hexagon-shaped metal ring suspended from a helicopter and flown at 90 miles per hour 120 feet off the ground. The technique has been used in the Imperial Valley in California and extensively in Denmark.

(follow “learn more about this project” to see a video of it in action).Hi Flow Sampling – Matt Whitney (National Physical Laboratory – UK) mentioned a new technology that can measure both the VOC concentration and flow rate of leaks from fugitive emissions (LDAR) sources. Measurements at a source can be done in two minutes using a 36 inch X 36 inch fabric capture bag.

The presentation also covered NPL’s efforts to enhance the Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) measurement process.

The effort used a test kit called MicroTox that produce can produce test results in 15 minutes. In a subsequent presentation, Charlie covered efforts to perform characterization of treated water produced from onshore operations involving fracking
Emissions From Biofuels Blended With Petroleum Fuels - Saurabh Pansare (Phillips 66) - This presentation focused on efforts to assess the significance of the emissions of secondary aerosols formed when biofuels are combined with traditional petroleum fuels.
